7 Simple Steps
to Professional Carpet Cleaning Without Spending a
Fortune
Whether you are thinking about having carpet installed, just
had carpet installed, or already have carpet in your home it is
very important to be aware of proper carpet care and upkeep.
Maintaining and cleaning your carpet ensures a healthy living
environment for you and your family. There are several
different ways to clean carpet, and little do many people know
that vacuuming alone does not successfully do the job!

to Speed Clean Your Home
1. Vacuum your carpet atleast once per week. Areas that
receive high volumes of traffic such as entry ways, stairs, and
hallways should be cleaned 2-3 times a week.
2. Always make slow passes over high traffic areas. Use the
push-pull method and extend your strokes out to about 3 feet.
Make sure to overlap your strokes until you have covered the
area completely. For light soiling two to three strokes are
sufficient. For heavy soiling about five to seven strokes get
the job done.
3. Avoid string, coins, metal objects, paper clips, gum and
electrical cords when vacuuming. Catching any of these objects
in your cleaner could mean the end of its days.
4. If your filter or bag is half full when you finish
vacuuming then dump the contents. If we can remember to do
this, the next time we need to vacuum our cleaner will be able
to operate at maximum cleaning efficiency. Also, used bags and
overflowing filters can release dirt particles into the air so
it's important to dump our vacuums contents after using.
5. About 85% of soilings in our carpet is dirt. This can
normally be taken care of by vacuuming. The other 15% is oils,
and sticky residue that begins to form after longs periods of
time. To remove this it's highly recommended to deep-clean your
carpet every 12 to 18 months. Depending if you have children or
household animals you may need to deep-clean your carpet more
often.
6. To save on carpet cleaning be sure to deep-clean your
carpet on time. When we fail to do this it not only shortens
our carpets life span, but makes our carpet harder to clean and
requires more money from our pockets. When we clean our carpets
on time our carpets look better, dust mites and harmful
allergens are removed and we promote a healthier home overall.
Our carpet also develops a stain resistance by decreasing its
ability of attracting dirt.
7. Instead of hiring a costly professional to clean our
carpet there are plenty of do-it-yourself methods available.
Consider purchasing or renting a professional quality
wet-extraction cleaner. These can be purchased at any home
appliance store at cost efficient prices.
*BONUS TIP* After using a commercial Carpet-Spot-Cleaner, if
your cleaner does not completely remove the stain, you need to
rinse the cleaner out of the carpet completely before trying
another cleaner. If we do not do this, the chemicals in the
product will often reattract dirt to the soil and increase the
stains chances of returning.
It should not be misunderstood that vacuuming is not
beneficial for your carpet, as vacuuming does
a good job at preventing dirt from embedding deep into the
carpet fibers. However, vacuuming realistically speaking
is not an activity that can be given full attention to
everyday. It would be more realistic to say that vacuuming
can be given attention to maybe about 2 times per week.
Because of this little problem, here is a way that you can
vacuum to ensure your carpet stays clean enough until the
next time you have to vacuum.
Before you begin vacuuming make sure that you have emptied
out the canister or replaced the bag first to ensure maximum
suction. Given the small amount of time that can be given to
vacuuming, for best results it is highly recommended that when
you do vacuum give more focus to areas of the house where
there is the most activity and this will help to maintain
the upkeep of your carpet and free from excessive dirt buildup
in the carpet fibers. Taking more time to focus on these
activity areas, going over them again and again will ensure the
best possible dirt removal from your carpet.
2.Shampooing & Steam-Cleaning
Extending beyond vacuum care into more thorough methods of
carpet cleaning, Shampooing and Steam Cleaning are two great
methods to use to ensure quality dirt removal. Shampooing and
Steam Cleaning consists in buying a carpet based shampoo which
is then added into a Carpet Shampooer Vacuum, which is a
machine specifically designed to shampoo or steam your carpet.
These products can be purchased at any home appliance store at
a reasonable price. Shampooing and Steam Cleaning can ensure a
deep and thorough clean of your carpet. It should be noted that
it’s easy to over shampoo your
carpet. Over-wetting your carpet is a sure way of
causing damage to your carpet.
Some Shampooers have suction like features which allow you
to dry any cleaned area after the shampoo has been applied.
This can prevent your carpet from over-wetting and potential
damage. Ideally, having a professional carpet cleaner come and
clean your carpet is the best way to go, but to save money it’s
not uncommon for many people to do it themselves. However, many
people are prone to making mistakes that a professional would
otherwise not make. Having your carpet cleaned professionally
is recommended once every year to 18 months.
3. Stain Removal
Steam Cleaning and Shampooing are common methods for deep
cleaning your carpet and do a good job at removing unwanted
stains. How do we effectively prevent stains from happening in
the first place though? In order to prevent future stains to
your carpet it is always best to act on them quickly when they
happen. Stains are inevitable and will happen sooner or later.
What many people don’t know is the longer you leave a stain to
sit in the carpet the harder it becomes to remove. The best
thing to do is to have several bottles of club soda ready to go
to use on spills. Follow this guideline if you have any carpet
spills:
-
Soak up as much of the stain as you possibly can
with old towels (use light towels) by standing on
them to increase absorption. By using a light towel
you will be able to see how much of the stain you
have gathered.
-
Pour club soda on the spill and as the carbonation
begins to bubble, blot up the stain right away by
standing on your towel for best absorption.
-
Next, use a carpet stain cleaner of your choice on
the stained area.
-
While using the stain cleaner make sure to never
rub your carpet – this will increase the damage of
the stain and wear out the fibers.
Using club soda is a good natural remedy and will work for
many spills when following this general guideline.
Here are a few tips on removing specific stains:
4.KOOL-AID: Pull out your handy-dandy
club-soda and apply the above method. If the stain has been
sitting for awhile or is an older stain continue with the above
method to help lighten the stain from the carpet. Use your
carpet cleaner on the stain and if the stain remains you can
use hydrogen peroxide to saturate it. Let the peroxide sit for
about 10-15 minutes then blot with a towel. Be sure while using
peroxide during the process that you aren’t lightening your
carpet - continue until the stain is out.
5.RED WINE: Red wine can be removed by
using White wine. Pour the white wine on the stain and saturate
with salt. Be careful when using salt as it can create a damp
patch if not used carefully. Follow this up with club soda and
carpet cleaner as mentioned in the above guideline.
6.COFFEE: When coffee has been spilled make
sure to act quickly! Follow the above guideline to blot the
stain immediately then apply club soda. Continue to apply and
blot the stain until it starts to disappear. If the stain
refuses to lift, you can attempt to use hydrogen peroxide and
let it sit on the stain for 10 to 15 minutes and then blot it
up. If the stain begins to lighten, go ahead and rinse the
stain out with cold water or club soda, then blot this up.
7.GUM: Gum needs to be frozen and then
scraped up followed up by a good carpet cleaner. Freeze the gum
by rubbing it with ice in a bag then scrape off as much as you
can. Use petroleum jelly to roll whatever gum may be left and
then apply a carpet cleaner.
Conclusion
Knowing how to clean your carpet when it gets dirty is
valuable knowledge to have. All in all if these methods and
tips are maintained you are ensuring the long-term health of
your carpet.
